Shirley Smart, a cellist and composer renowned for her versatility, leads ‘Bezique,’ a trio that brings together the sounds of jazz, folk, and world music. Their repertoire is a beautiful mix of acoustic jazz and café music from around the world, including iconic compositions by the legendary Django Reinhardt, Richard Galliano, Bireli Lagrene, and many others.
In addition to their jazz roots, Bezique adds a unique twist by incorporating Maurice el-Medioni, the Algerian chaabi pianist, into their set, introducing a rare North African flavour that infuses the trio’s sound with a cosmopolitan edge. This distinctive blend of jazz with occasional touches of North African rhythms creates a sound unlike anything else on the UK acoustic jazz scene.
With Mike Guy on accordion and Marcus Penros on double bass, the trio creates an intimate yet expansive sound, making each performance a musical journey. Their spontaneous improvisations, melodic beauty, and engaging storytelling make their live shows an unforgettable experience.
