Sam Braysher Quartet: The Music of Kurt Weill

“A New Jazz, closely attuned to an old world.” ~ John Fordham, The Guardian

The warmly-toned young London saxophonist, Sam Braysher, is a prize-winning investigator of the early recordings and published music of Jerome Kern, Nat King Cole, and Duke Ellington. His latest project delves into the work of Kurt Weill, a composer whose legacy straddles European classical music, jazz, opera, and American musical theatre. While Weill is often recognised for songs like ‘Mack The Knife’ and ‘September Song’, Sam explores some of his lesser-known pieces with characteristically thoughtful and varied arrangements. From the swirling harmonies of Weill’s Weimar-era collaborations with Bertold Brecht to his more jazz-infused American period, Braysher promises an exploration that spans the breadth of Weill’s repertoire.

Expect swinging renditions of classic tunes like ‘My Ship’ and ‘September Song,’ adorned with a fabulous dusting of Gershwin and Cole Porter melodies. This promises to be another uniquely captivating concert at Twickenham Jazz Club.
