We are delighted to invite you to an evening of sophisticated jazz as the Nick Tomalin Quintet presents “Shades of Shearing” at our club!

The Shades of Shearing show celebrates the distinctive style of the classic George Shearing Quintet, shining a light on this influential British pianist who found fame after settling in the US in the late ’40s. Expect a repertoire of Shearing’s best-known works—including ‘Lullaby of Birdland’ and ‘September in the Rain’—alongside hidden gems like ‘Consternation’ and fresh original compositions inspired by his music.

Nick Tomalin is a highly regarded jazz pianist known for his subtle yet swinging bebop-inspired approach. With a career spanning over three decades, he has become a sought-after figure on the London jazz scene.

A fixture of the London jazz scene for nearly 30 years, Nick Tomalin has worked with the likes of Jim Mullen, Mark Lockheart, Stan Sulzmann, and Alan Barnes. His connection to Shearing runs deep—when still a student, he appeared in a masterclass with the jazz legend, filmed for The Southbank Show’s The Shearing Touch. That experience helped inspire the formation of this very quintet.

Joining him are:

  • Nat Steele on vibraphone: A vigorous and resourceful performer, Nat’s speed and dexterity have impressed audiences nationwide.

  • Dave Warren on guitar: Echoing a distinct bebop style reminiscent of Grant Green, Dave brings a lithe, slightly bluesy touch to the ensemble.

  • Dominic Howles on bass: A nimble and talented bassist, Dominic’s contributions provide a solid foundation for the group’s explorations.

  • Matt Fishwick on drums: With an ability to set up shuffling rhythms and drive the pace forward, Matt’s drumming adds depth and energy to the performance.

The repertoire includes Shearing’s best-known tunes like “Lullaby of Birdland” and “Conception,” as well as original compositions such as “September Samba” and “Blues for George.” These pieces combine radio-friendly melodicism with full-blooded bebop, offering a fresh perspective on Shearing’s legacy.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the timeless elegance of George Shearing’s music, reimagined by some of the finest jazz musicians on the scene today.

We look forward to welcoming you for an unforgettable evening of jazz.
