Twickenham Jazz Club's Past Gigs

Mike Piggott’s Hot Club Quartet

“One of the best jazz-fiddlers active anywhere” – New York Times

UK jazz violinist Mike Piggott presents an entertaining programme of jazz favourites from the music of Stephane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, Cole Porter, Fats Waller, George Gershwin to the “Blues”. The show also includes the music of other jazz violinists including Joe Venuti and Stuff Smith – also one or two unusual musical instruments!

Mike Piggott – Described by Jazz Uk as a “Master of the Violin” is also a favourite violinist and guitarist of many musicians. Mike has performed, recorded and toured with a wide range of artists including Martin Taylor, Nigel Kennedy, Ken Peplowski, and Phil Collins. It was fantastic to welcome him to Twickenham Jazz Club. The joint will be a jump-in.

His Glittering Band includes Nils Solberg (guitar and vocals) who has toured recorded and broadcast with Nigel Kennedy, Clare Teal, and Bryan Ferry

Peter Morgan on double bass: A much loved and highly respected local musician who is much sought after by visiting American Jazz musicians and has played with Digby Fairweather, Don Rendell, Acker Bilk and many more.

Rod Brown on drums: A tasteful and very experienced drummer who has supported many great artists including Elaine Delmar, Matt Munro and Clare Teal.

The Band:

Mike Piggott – Violin,

Nils Solberg – Guitar and Vocals,

Peter Morgan – Double Bass,

Rod Brown – Drums

The last time this incredible and beloved band took the stage at Twickenham Jazz Club, they received a well-deserved standing ovation. The energy, musical prowess, and sheer expertise they delivered were nothing short of remarkable. For those who are new to their music, brace yourselves for an extraordinary experience rooted in the essence of the Great Hot Club tradition. Their sound carries the timeless echoes of legends like Stefan Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Stuff Smith, and Slim Garland.

Picture subtle Gypsy Swing melodies, presented in an almost intimate acoustic manner. And that’s not all – the performance is adorned with touches of violin history and astonishing innovations in playing rare instruments.

The band’s leader, Mike Piggott, has earned a spot among the finest swing jazz fiddle players in the world, as proclaimed by the esteemed New York Jazz Times.

Nils Solberg, the guitarist and vocalist, boasts a musical journey peppered with collaborations alongside luminaries like Bryan Ferry, Nigel Kennedy, Clare Teal, Fapy Lafertin, Gary Potter, and Ralph McTell. His prowess as a jazz guitarist, vocalist, soloist, accompanist, and recording artist remains in constant demand.

Our bassist, Pete Morgan, whose extensive career in performing and recording speaks volumes. A blend of humility and talent, he’s garnered respect from fellow musicians and audiences alike. He encapsulates his musical philosophy perfectly: “The musicians who inspire me the most are the ones who play like themselves, with real humanity.

And the drummer, Rodders Brown – a man of few words but boundless rhythm. His drumming is simply infectious, a seamless fusion of smiles and swing that keeps the groove alive.
