Twickenham Jazz Club's Past Gigs

Harry Diplock Presents: The Music of Django Reinhardt and Much More

“I attended Twickenham Jazz club on Wednesday night at the Cabbage Patch on 30th September.

Harry Diplock appeared at 2000 with a Bass player and another guitarist – Sol Grimshaw – from his Trio and a jazz violinist Matt Holborn.

There was not a lot of chat and we were soon into an evening of (mainly) Django Rheinhart Gypsy Jazz. Django was a Belgian Romani who founded / invented guitar based Gypsy Jazz along with Stephan Grappelli. He was the first major jazz talent to emerge from Europe and he invented guitar as a jazz instrument. He played with a plectrum and was possessed of a two fingered technique, a driving right hand and a dazzling virtuosity.

Harry Diplock also plays with a plectrum and has a dexterous left hand (all five fingers) and displayed his improvisation skills straight away. Among the numbers we had Minor Swing and Nuages I think. His companion on the guitar had a similar style and as well as providing some excellent ryhthm work showed he could improvise with considerable skill.

This was a really enjoyable evening of high quality playing, some solid bass playing from Lorenzo Morabito and a wide range of skill from the Violinist who used his command of the harmonics and bow technique to great effect. He complimented the guitar players when he had to and took the lead with consumate ease.

A particularly enjoyable number was the Gershwin song Embraceable You which started as a slow ballad on the violin and then launched into a high velocity improvised section from both guitars.

The spirit of Django and Grappelli were well represented in Twickenham on Wednesday night.”

Harry Diplock

Harry Diplock is currently credited as being at the forefront of Django Reinhardt-inspired jazz in the UK. Inspired by the Parisian jazz scene, his passion for the music is infectious and his versatility simply astounding.

Harry started his journey in his bedroom in Devon, obsessively working out the complexities of Django’s music. He came to London as a guitar builder and was rapidly absorbed into the UK jazz scene as a brilliant guitarist. He has since played at many of London’s foremost jazz clubs, including Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express, Soho Jazz Club and the 606 Club, as well as European venues such as Le Duc des Lombards and Torino Jazz Club.

Harry is also an educator and co-founder of The London Django Collective, and has shared the stage with many greats including Antoine Boyer, Paulus Schäfer, Olli Soikkeli, Mathieu Chatelain and Joe Webb.

It has taken over 18 months for Harry to find a space in his diary to play for us again. He is simply wonderful. Lucky us.

Django Reinhardt (1910–1953)

Django was a Romani Belgian jazz guitarist who lived a stormy and dramatic life, famously losing the use of his third and fourth fingers in a caravan fire at the age of 18. Undeterred, he set aside the violin and banjo and concentrated on guitar.

Sadly, like many brilliant musicians, his life was short — he collapsed after playing at a Paris nightclub at the age of 43. But his legacy lives on through his music, and his extraordinary musicianship still inspires musicians and audiences alike, decades after his passing.

So join us for an uplifting exploration of this heady, enthusiastic genre — a concert guaranteed to have your toes tapping and your soul smiling.
