Few British Jazz Clubs can capture the atmosphere and intimacy that happens in some of the most iconic venues in central London, but Twickenham Jazz Club truly does. Recently described by one of our guest musicians as ‘West London’s Ronnie Scotts‘ our intimate theatre bar and stage lends itself to great musicianship and expression.
The upcoming evening concert is a great example of this when we welcome veteran saxophonist Art Themen to play for us accompanied by Pete Whittaker on organ and George Double on drums as they recreate their concert in August 2023 at Pizza Express Dean Street and play music from their newly recorded album ‘A Night in Soho‘
Art Themen
Art has been a beloved character of the British jazz scene for over 60 years. Fantastically exciting, playful and inventive he famously combined his role as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with saxophone duties in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey among many others. Described by The Observer as “One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians”, he remains as brilliant and inimitable as ever.
Themen’s trio ‘The Villeins‘ features organist Pete Whittaker, formerly of The Nigel Price Organ Trio, and drummer George Double who has worked as sidesman to Shirley Bassey and Jack Jones. The band’s groove-led re-imaginings of quirky curiosities from the jazz canon act as a perfect vehicle for the twinkly mischief of this genuine grandee of British jazz and have delighted crowds at Ronnie Scott’s, The Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, Pizza Express Dean St and across the UK.
“A first-rate trio an excellent set” ~ Dave Gelly, THE OBSERVER
